Sign Language Interpreters

American Sign Language is the third most used language in the United States (English and Spanish the only two used more frequently), yet people who use it, individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing are some of the most isolated in our country due to the language and cultural barriers put in place by the community. One way to demonstrate respect for people who are deaf and hard of hearing is to make sure ASL interpreters are available when attempting to communicate with someone who uses ASL as his/her primary language. This list, though not comprehensive should get you started in locating resources near you who may assist in interpreting.

Some common facts to keep in mind: ASL interpreters are skilled individuals who usually need to be paid to provide their services. There are different certificates available to ASL interpreters, you should ask if the person you are contacting is certified or not. Also keep in mind if your event requires more than 2 consecutive hours of translation services you should plan on having at least two interpreters present at the event. (This is to help prevent carpel tunnel syndrome that interpreters may contract if signing too long).
