AT Reuse Capacity Building Grants RFP

AT Reuse Capacity Building Grants

Notice of Awards

The AT Network is pleased to announce the award of grants to five organizations to help expand the reuse of assistive technology for Californians with disabilities. The AT Reuse Capacity Building grants will support increased reassignment of used devices to new individuals who can benefit from the devices. Additionally, The AT Network will provide technical assistance and online resources to these organizations to increase their capacity to serve consumers and improve their operations to meet nationally accepted standards established by the Pass It On Center (passitoncenter.org).

A volunteer committee of AT and funding professionals reviewed nine qualified proposals submitted in response to a Request for Proposals published in Februrary. Based on narratives, budgets and other documents submitted, the committee chose to fund the following projects:

Independent Living Services of Northern California will receive $29,500 to purchase a van. ILSNC services a large geographic area in Northern California. Many communities are quite far from their Chico and Redding offices. The van will enable ILSNC to accept donations of durable medical equipment and other devices in those distant communities, as well as be able to deliver cleaned, sanitized and refurbished devices to consumers who live far from the center.

The Center for Independent Living (Berkeley) will receive $30,000 to fund construction of santization facilities as part of a new Wheelchair sales and repair shop. CIL, which recently moved to the Ed Roberts Campus, a center for community services for people with disabilities in Berkeley, is remodeling its former store front on telegraph avenue for its new spoke shop. In addition to sales and service of wheelchairs and scooters, the facility will also be used to accept donations of used wheelchairs and other assistive devices which will be sanitized, repaired, refurbished and provided to low income cunsumers in the community.

Convalent Aid Society (Pasadena) will receive $30,000 to fund renovations to increase storage and provide an area for sanitazation of wheelchairs and other equipment. The Convalence Aid Society has been cleaning and repairing used mobility devices and providing them to low income citizens for more than 80 years. The renovations will allow them to accept and store more donations. The new sanitation facilicties, which will enable them to ensure that all equipent is properly cleaned and sanitized for new users.

Californians Actively Living Independent & Free (CALIF) of Los Angeles will receive $30,000 to fund a number of improvements to their current reuse program. The money will pay for staff training, van repairs, storage remodeling and stockpiling of parts.

A fifth award is pending and contingent on the organization receiving other funding. That grant will be announced once the additional funding is secured.
