California Area Agencies on Aging (AAA)

You can locate an AAA in your area by calling 1-800-510-2020 or find your county phone number by visiting their web site. The California Department of Aging contracts with and provides leadership and direction to Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) that coordinate a wide array of services to seniors and adults with disabilities at the community level and serve as the focal point for local aging concerns.

Community Development Block Grants

Local agencies provide grants or low-interest loans to assist homeowners with modifications and repairs to the home. Based on income. Visit their web site to find your local number or call the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) at 800-998-9999 or 202-708-1112.

The Weatherization Assistance for Low-Income Persons program provides adequate insulation to conserve energy for low-income homes, particularly those who have disabilities or are elderly.

Habitat for Humanity

Families in need of decent shelter apply to local Habitat affiliates. The affiliate's family selection committee chooses homeowners based on their level of need, their willingness to become partners in the program and their ability to repay the no-interest loan.

Multipurpose Senior Services Program (MSSP)

Local Multipurpose Senior Service Program (MSSP) sites provide social and health care management for frail elderly clients who are certifiable for placement in a nursing facility but who wish to remain in the community. The services must be provided at a cost lower than that for nursing facility care. Clients eligible for the program must be 65 years of age or older, live within a site's service area, be able to be served within MSSP's cost limitations, be appropriate for care management services, currently eligible for Medi-Cal, and certified or certifiable for placement in a nursing facility. MSSP site staff make this certification determination based upon Medi-Cal criteria for placement. The following counties do not have Multipurpose Senior Service Programs (MSSP) at present: Colusa, Del Norte, Nevada, Plumas, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Sierra and Sutter.

Partners in Care Foundation

A private non-profit foundation. Family Care Network (FCN) grants pay for wheelchairs, handrails, ramps and other home modifications, hearing aids, dental work, work readiness education, and help at home - tangible means for people to shop and work, attend religious services and meetings, and regain participation in family and community life. They serve the Southern California area.

Rural Housing Administration

Individuals living in a rural community of less than 20,000 residents may apply for Section 504 loans or grants to make a home accessible to people with disabilities.

Rebuilding Together

Provides assistance to those who own their own home but whom, because of physical limitation or income, are not able to cover the costs of home repair.

State of California Department of Rehabilitation (DOR)

DOR provides Vocational Rehabilitation Services to Californians with disabilities that want to work. They may provide for home modifications and/or durable medical equipment for DOR clients that qualify.
